Jim Reid, a partner in the firm, focuses his practice on civil litigation, with particular experience in personal injury, construction, commercial litigation, mechanic’s liens, estate litigation, real estate tax collection, and real estate litigation.  Jim’s litigation practice is a natural extension of his highly competitive background as a football player at the University of Virginia and then as an NFL player with the Houston Oilers.  Jim focuses on teamwork with the client to achieve the client’s specific goals.

Jim has counseled clients in a wide variety of litigation matters.  His personal injury practice ranges from the routine automobile accident or slip and fall case to catastrophic automobile injury cases and wrongful death claims.   He has also represented general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers in litigation and arbitration in a variety of contract disputes, mechanic’s lien and bond claims, and administrative actions before the State Board of Contractors and the State Building Code Technical Review Board.

Jim also has significant experience in real estate litigation, having handled partition suits, boundary line disputes, residential purchase contract disputes, injunctive actions to establish access to property and to bar access to property, suits for adverse possession, and quiet title actions.  In addition, Jim represents local governments in the collection and enforcement of delinquent real estate taxes.  In handling estate litigation, Jim has advised clients with respect to will contests, disputes over estate distributions, and multi-million dollar estate litigation involving allegations of fraud and forgery.

Jim’s experience has earned him recognition by his peers as “Legal Elite” by Virginia Business magazine in the area of Civil Litigation in 2011, 2012, and 2015.

Jim is admitted to all Virginia state courts, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  He is also a member of the Newport News Bar Association, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia.  In 2007 and 2011, he was selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers magazine “Rising Stars” edition.

Jim is a native of Newport News and attended Hampton Roads Academy.  He was a first team All-ACC and Academic All-ACC offensive lineman at the University of Virginia and, prior to his graduation in 1993, received the Joe Palumbo Award presented by the University of Virginia Athletic Department for self-sacrifice, dedication, and enthusiasm.  Jim was recently honored as an inaugural inductee into the Hampton Roads Academy Athletic Hall of Fame.  Jim attended law school at the University of Richmond where he graduated, cum laude, in 2000.  He lives in York County with his wife and their two children.

Jim is active in the community through his involvement in youth sports, both through occasional speaking engagements to youth teams and coaching.  He has coached in the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League, the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex, in the Williamsburg Youth Basketball League, coached football for the York-Seaford Bulldogs, and is currently coaching with the Virginia Venom, a youth travel basketball team.
